Campaign Rules

Important Note

The campaign is planned to run as two arcs, starting first with a low level mini-campaign with very average people that are in over their heads. Only in the second arc will players have access to the traditionally heroic characters one expected from D&D.

Starting character rules (Second Arc)

  • Races: Almost any race without level adjustment. Please check with the DM regarding particularly unusual races.
  • Classes: Most normal races. Please avoid exotic choices from optional rulebooks without checking with the DM first.
  • Level: Start at second level with 1000 total experience.
  • Alignment: Anything non-evil alignment, but likely leaning towards good or law.
  • Stats: The six ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, etc.) can be determined in two ways:
    • “Point Buy” (Consult this calculator for help. Please add up to 25 points)
    • “Standard Rolls” (Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest die (So 4+5+1+2 would be a roll of 11) six times and arrange them in any order)
  • Gold: Everyone starts with exactly 900 gold.
  • Equipment: Start with one free outfit (up to 5 gold value), otherwise buy all gear.

Starting character rules (First Arc)

  • Level: Start at first level with 100 experience (even a country bumpkin’s had a bar brawl at some point, right?)
  • Alignment: Anything that isn’t evil. Chaotic Neutral? Fine. Lawful Neutral? Why not? Chaotic Good? Sure! Lawful Evil? Not happening.
  • Stats: The six ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, etc.) can be determined in two ways:
    • “Standard Array” (Use 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 and arrange them in any order)
    • “Standard Rolls” (Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest die (So 4+5+1+2 would be a roll of 11) six times and arrange them in any order)
  • Gold: Using NPC classes, I’m going to use a house rule for character finances, seeing as these are common men, working stiffs. The specific rule will depend on your class
    • Expert: Take ranks in Profession or Craft or Sleight of Hand. Roll 3 skill checks and add your results. This is your starting gold representing savings from your job or raw thievery.
    • Warrior: Make 4 attack rolls and add your results or multiply your Constitution score by 4. This is your starting gold, representing how effectively you can sell yourself as a guard or mercenary.
    • Adept: Take the Heal skill or one of the Expert skills above. Roll 3 skill checks and add your results. This is your starting gold representing temple or clinic pay.
    • I’m perfectly willing to discuss alternate rolls on an individual basis
  • Equipment: Characters are assumed to have Peasant’s Outfits unless they are willing to pay for better.
  • Background: All I ask is that you have some concept of your character. Ideally, being from a small town on the outskirts of the kingdom, I’m thinking the characters all know each other and are (more or less) friends already. I’m flexible on that and open to any and all thoughts on character background.
